The General Data Protection Regulation (‘GDPR’), in force 25 May 2018, gives enhanced powers to the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) and enhances the rights of individuals (data subjects). Organisations are required to review how they collect and store personal data, as well as how they contact customers and clients, to ensure compliance with the new Regulation. The consequences for organisations of being in breach of the GDPR can include large fines by the DPC and/or being sued in court by data subjects. Now is the time for businesses to check and ensure they have made the changes necessary to be ‘GDPR-ready’.
